For this project the possible examples that I would be interested in presenting are the discourses I am currently taken apart in. I currently am taken part in multiple discourses such as the discourse of track and field, dental assisting, and retail worker.

The discourse of dental assisting it is a group of people that are fluent in the procedures and everyday task that need to be completed. They are able to multitask by being able to complete chairside, independent, surgical, reception, and lab task on a daily basis. There are multiple guidelines that need to be followed in order to actively do the task completely and successfully.

Sources for this discourse: The data that could be used is a the terms used daily, the DAMB book, radiology and ICE certification.

Initial Thoughts: I think this data makes sense because they are needed to show that you are fluent in this discourse. To work in a workplace you need to atleast be ICE and radiology certified. There also various terms that need to understood in order to complete task on a daily basis. There is also the data of actually working in the field to get the best idea of how it works.

The other idea I have is the discourse of track and field. This discourse is a group of people that enjoy running and participating in multiple field events. They are actively engaged people that can take part in more than one event in the duration of the meet. Sources for this discourse: For data the use of an article of track and field can be beneficial and a playbook of rules that are required.

Initial thoughts: The rules book for track and field can offer the rules and regulations that are needed in order to have a fluent meet. It also demonstrates the values that need to be shown in order to properly engage in the discourse. An article can show how fans and player voice their opinion on the discourse of track and field. Also can show some relationships between the player and fan.

The other idea of a discourse i am apart of would be the discourse of a retail worker. This is a group of people that work in sales with the community. They learn to socialize through different situations and promote certain products.

Sources for this discourse:  The data that could be used to support the discourse I am presenting is pieces of language from conversations through the interaction between customer and clients. The website of the store, handbook, or manual.

Initial thoughts: The use of a conversation piece will show the interaction between the two parties. Which shows how good the person is in the discourse, or how they differ with the way of the discourse. Also the handbook, website, or manual will show what the discourse offers to the person that is interested in the discourse. The manual and handbook will bring rise to the social goods being offered through this specific discourse.

Printmaking: Printmaking is a type of art where you can use a carved plate to print an edition of the same piece. This became popular when Johannes Gutenberg invented the printing press. At this time it was more popular to print the Bible and the new of course, but as time went on, it was used for arts. This type of art was used primarily for propaganda and circus posters in the fifties and is slowly becoming popular again in the art world.

Possible Sources – For this Discourse, I could show either a print and the materials to make one, or go through a step by step process of a specific time of print and how you print it.

Initial thoughts – Even with showing both of these artifacts it will give my listeners a lot of insight of what printmaking is all about. Theres a lot of different tools you can use to carve specific plates so I could use those as artifacts too. I think showing the few things used to make the prints it will help better understand the printing process. Showing the process figuratively will bring everything into full circle how everything works together.

Working at Olympic Physical Therapy: Physical therapy is essentially rehabilitation of the body through exercising. PT offices can usually be found in every town, and I worked at the one in my town for a summer. I worked alongside the physical therapist and saw the multitude of tasks they worked on. I also worked alongside the PTA’s which stands for physical therapist assistant, who helped patients do their specific exercises. PT’s can work anywhere from offices, to colleges, to hospitals.

Possible Sources – I could use a packet that they give to patients with some exercises, and I could also show a few tutorials of what machines they use for specific areas of the body.

Initial thoughts – Working with physical therapists can be very confusing because there is a lot to it. I think showing the packet of exercises will be good because they usually show exactly what it is helping and how it helps the area of hurt. Showing the machines will essentially do the same thing. Maybe I could have my listeners do a few of the exercises to show them what its like. Also, with each patient comes a check list with all of the exercises they are supposed to do, that could also be helpful to show what it’s used for in the office.

Playing High School Soccer (Last Option): Soccer can be played recreationally, on a team, in high school, there are club teams, and the dream, professionally. This is a game that consists of eleven players on each team (including a goalie), two teams, a ball, and a net for each team. There are various rules and regulations that come along with this game that makes learning about it quite interesting.

Possible Sources – For the Discourse of soccer, I could show a book where all the players are logged and the actions they make as a player are marked (such as goals and shots on goal or if you are the goalie, they mark your saves). I could also possibly recite what the refs tell the players right before the game that has to do with safety, making sure you are game ready by your uniform, sportsmanship, etc.

Initial thoughts – The book shows how each players stats can be taken and compared for each game. It really can show on a timeline how you progressed as a player. It also gives the newspapers their stats for the next day paper and the big win headliner. What the refs say at beginning of each game will give incite to what we have to wear and how to wear it, and what we can and can’t have on. Also the rules of sportsmanship are included in that as well, aka how you have to act within the game. The only thing I wish there was an artifact for is the refs calls. What they call is very important because it tells you what your next action has to be. Maybe there is a different artifact I can show that does show this.

Veterinarians or “vets” are physicians or surgeons that treat animals. They specialize in treating disease, disorder and injury in all types of animals. There are guidelines that they have to follow, along with following and preforming certain procedures.

Possible data sources: Animal hospitals (website), talking to actually veterinarians, shelters/clinics, taking my pet to their check up at the vet’s office.

Initial thoughts: Animal hospitals can give me specific details on types of animals they work on, specific language that vets use to communicate. Talking to actual vets can help me identify the identities in the Discourse and relationships between those identities.

Working as a pharmacy technician you have to understand different types of medications, where they belong in the pharmacy, and how to properly package them when giving them to patients. You should be aware of patient’s allergies to certain medications. You should also know substitutions for medications when the first choice isn’t available or because of insurance problems.

Possible data sources: Talking to actual pharmacy technicians, or pharmacists. Visiting a pharmacy. Searching a drug data base.

Initial thoughts: Me being a pharmacy tech I know the type of lingo used in the pharmacy and the proper things to wear in a pharmacy. I have a basic understanding of how drugs need to be handled.

Being a lifeguard you have to know basic first aid and how to perform CPR if needed, and how to perform rescues if someone is drowning. Depending on where you are lifeguarding you should know wave conditions and about shark sitings if you are at a beach. Also when high or low tide is.

Possible data sources: Talking to a lifeguard. Taking a lifeguard certification test – study that test.

Initial thoughts: Talking to a lifeguard would give me specific details about how the job actually is. You are responsible for other people’s lives while on the job and need to be ready to rescue/save a life if need be.

Hockey-Hockey tape, Hockey stick, Skates/  I think these artifacts will help me with discourse because they are the basics for starting out hockey. I think that once you describe these artifacts it will help someone who doesn’t know much about hockey will be able to get a better understanding.

Working out-Dumbbell, Jumprope,Gym shoes/ I believe that brining in these three artifacts will help the listener get a better understanding because I’m providing basic workout equipment. I can show how the equipment is useful when working out. I can also can use these artifacts to show the listener the material used to make the equipment.

Drawing- Pencil,Eraser,Drawing Paper/ With describing the discourse with drawing,I figured that pencil, erasers and paper would very helpful because they are the first three things you need when beginning to draw. I think the most important part is drawing paper rather than regular paper because it shows you are specifically doing drawing.
