When reading “habits of the creative mind” Pages 208-219, I discovered a few things that I can do to improve my paper. I want to make a stronger challenge to the scholarly conversation as is applies to Gee’s “An Introduction to Discourse Analysis”.In this document she does not mention the possibility of a non-dominant Discourse becoming a dominant discourse. But for most hockey players that’s their dream, this transition from  playing a little kids game 2 still playing little kids game for millions of dollars, and the  recognition that comes with being a pro hockey player. There’s even artifacts that show this transition.  often junior hockey players will say make it to “the show” which means making it to the NHL. I feel as if I center my ideas around this challenge to gee,  it will make my paper stronger and more interesting. After reading the letting go section of Habits of the creative mind, I was able to look over my project  and found certain information that just confused my reader.  I have  removed such passages. Getting feedback is important to establish the main question or problem your breeding seeks to address, It allows you to see if you have been successful at educating somebody in the Discourse.

As far as my artifacts go I think I could definitely use one more to make my 3rd. This artifact will hopefully clear up and confusions my reader has about my Discourse. I also feel as though I can still better integrate my artifacts with With gee’s ideas about About discourse.  I may that you Develop a paragraph to develop the idea of Discourse and of Discourse analysis after my into to synthesize the Discourse of Hockey and Gee’s Idea’s. I want to more clearly represent the idea that hockey is a hybrid Discourse because Player’s try to reach their highest potential to go from a non-dominant Discourse  to a dominant Discourse. I also am going to develop a strong conclusion once i’m done adding my last artifact and incorporating in into the Discourse of hockey and Gee’s idea’s. My peer review group was able to help me locate the points in my essay where I need to further elaborate on certain terms that are in the discourse. Ex what is a healthy scratch?

Annotations of artifacts

I think I am off to a good start with this Discourse analysis Project. I have a solid amount of knowledge about hockey sticks, you could even say I’m Fluent in the Discourse by enacting gee’s values “Saying, Doing, Being, Believing, and Valuing.” I think I will be able to engage in the scholarly conversation in Practices, Identities, and sign systems and knowledge. In the practices paragraph I can get into how to prepare your hockey stick for use EX taping, cutting, and waxing. Then in Identities I can get into some of the moves you can do in a game with your stick as well as how to shoot. Lastly, I think it could be interesting to talk about Hockey lingo as it relates heavily to the Systems and knowledge element of being in a Discourse, without knowing what “sauce it” means you could find yourself lost out there on the Ice. In competitive hockey there is no room for slip up on your Discourse elements as doing so could result in injury, or even worse getting cut from your team. That’s why I choose the topic because I believe their are some specific outlines that you need to be aware of to fit it. I also think the stick is the best way to show light on more aspects of the game as they come up when the stick gets there. This project will differ from my Half Pecka-Kucha because that only shed light on how to properly buy a stick, in my Discourse project I will get into related topics as relate back to Gee’s elements of a Discourse.

-After peer review and thinking of ways to improve my project. I believe I do a solid job of Identifying relatable ideas from Gee and Brandt and show how those ideas are present in my chosen literacy narratives. This fits into the Affirming – The literacy narrative samples from the archive confirm (align with, support, or show the validity of) something in Gee/Brandt/Alexander. W with my topic a hand being “having a literacy sponsor or sponsors is important in gaining access into the Discourse of literacy. I believe the best way to also add another aspect to my paper as far as affirming adding or challenging, would be to challenge the Gee and Brandt texts using a Literacy narrative that goes against their ideas of the importance of a sponsor and the necessary things to be in a Discourse.

-I feel like I properly give enough info on Gee and brandt that anybody who reads my paper can understand what I’m talking about without reading either text. That being said I only go over essential things to my topic.

-I feel if I go over the Gee and Brandt Texts again before looking for a literacy narrative that can challenge what they have to say, I could better formulate a plan to challenge GEE and Brandt.

Dear Peer Reviewer,

  • My Question or Issue – In the “rising carin” I have narrowed down the Literacy narratives to the story’s that have a sponsor that helps them advance to the next step in becoming fluent in the Discourse of Literacy. I will be discussing how sponsors(brandt) can affects one’s views on literacy and their ability to enter the Discourse of literacy(Gee).
  • My Data Shows- This event has had impact on his acquisition of the Discourse of literacy today as he quotes “This book was seriously a source of happiness and pride for me as a kid and inspired my learning and education honestly.” + The two bonded and having Kennice in his life as a literacy sponsor  allowed him to realize  “I was always a terrible writer because I only did what the teacher asked of me and not anything more. But growing and realizing that having an indefinite attitude is not the best idea, I changed my habits and became a much better writer, student, and person.”
  • I’m Adding to the Scholarly Conversation- I feel that I have been able to logically link two ideas from Gee and Brandt and find specific narratives that reinforce the idea that having a literacy sponsor is key to being on the path of Discourse acquisition
  • I’m affirming or challenging a Concept in X – I don’t know if I’m challenging any of Gee or brandts ideas yet. Would that be against want i’m trying to message? However most of 2nd and 3rd paragraph shows affirming information synthesizing GEE Brandt and the “rising cairn” narratives.

2. The most common ‘cultural narrative’ that scholars observe students performing in literacy narratives is the conventional literacy success story” (Alexander 609). What is this conventional story, and why does it seem so prevalent in student literacy narratives? Support your response with evidence from Alexander and a discussion of ways your own literacy narrative from English 122 does or does not fit this kind of story. (15 minutes)

4. Alexander contrasts “master” and “little” narratives. What is this contrast, and why is it important for her to make sense of student literacy narratives? Use at least one kind of little narrative discussed by Alexander (614-22) to illustrate how little narratives differ from the “master narrative” one so often finds and explain that difference. Be sure to quote Alexander. (15 minutes)

6. Revisit Brandt’s ideas about literacy sponsorship. Select at least one of the cultural narrative types identified by Alexander (614-22) and explore the ways that Alexander’s discussion of that type offers insights into Brandt’s idea of literacy sponsors. As a reminder, Brandt defines literacy sponsors as “any agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract, who enable, support, teach, model, as well as recruit, regulate, suppress, or withhold literacy – and gain advantage by it in some way” (556). Be sure to quote Alexander and Brandt. Suggestion: pick a cultural narrative type that interests you! (20 minutes)

  1. Brandt’s opening paragraph sketches a history of printmaking. At the end of the paragraph, she uses the term “literacy sponsorship.” Describe the reason Brandt sees printmaking as a site for literacy development. In addition, explain why Brandt finds a paradox in the rise of the penny press.  The information you need is confined to the first paragraph of her article.

She sees it as printmaking as a site for literacy because of the amount of change the two things can bring to the world. The rise of the new allowed more things to be printed with less people causing the importance of literacy development to increase. She finds a Paradox when the steam powered press made print more accessible making printing more profitable it caused a end to a particular form of literacy sponsorship and a drop in the number of people that could actually be a literary sponsor.

  1. Brandt defines literacy sponsors as “any agents, local or distant, concrete or abstract, who enable, support, teach, model, as well as recruit, regulate, suppress, or withhold literacy – and gain advantage by it in some way” (556). This is a complicated or multidimensional understanding of the concept. Using examples from Brandt, Gee, or your own literacy narrative (written in ENG 122 and published in Rising Cairn), describe how sponsors can do at least two of these things. Be sure to explain why the evidence from your examples shows that sponsors do what you think your examples show.

Gee Is a literary sponsor because he gives his ideas of Discourse and enables people gain knowledge on literacy and what it really means to be a part of something. He also teaches new ideas and withhold vast amounts of literacy knowledge.

  1. “Literacy, like land, is a valued commodity in this economy, a key resource in gaining profit and edge” (Brandt 558). If literacy is so valued, why might so many people have such complicated relationships to reading and writing, perhaps two of the most important features of literacy?

Due to the fact that some people are not lucky enough to be born into societies that include the learning of reading and writing in their Primary Discourse. Literate nations have controlled most of the world’s economy over time.

  1. “Throughout their lives, affluent people from high-caste racial groups have multiple and redundant contacts with powerful literacy sponsors as a routine part of their economic and political privileges. Poor people and those from low-caste racial groups have less consistent, less politically secured access to literacy sponsors – especially to the ones that can grease their way to academic and economic success” (Brandt 559). How might Gee explain the differences between the affluent and the poor on literacy? Be sure to quote Gee in your explanation. It might be helpful to use Branch and Lopez (in Brandt) for details to aid your explanation.

Gee values would understand why less fortunate people that reading and writing was not incorporating into their primary Discourse. When It comes to the people that have learned to read and write and have been educated throughout their youth he can act as a literary sponsor and give off powerful ideas.
