Interview Recording Options

There are numerous ways to capture audio in an interview.

Zoom is probably going to be the easiest/best for you.

Voice Memo or Recording App on iPhone or Android Device

These can work pretty well in an in-person interview, with a little attention to keeping the microphone near the speaker’s mouth (yours, your interviewee’s).

It can be a bit challenging to record a phone interview, but it can be done. Here’s some help: https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-to-record-a-phone-call-on-an-iphone/

Zoom

Ahh, Zoom. We can host a Zoom meeting with our interviewee, who can call in with a phone or via computer. Using Zoom’s recording tool, we can capture the audio as a file (and the audio/video). Save the recording to the Cloud, then get a link from Zoom a little while later. You can then download the files, then import the audio into GarageBand. You’ll get better audio if you and your interviewee use an external microphone, but it is not a requirement.

Digital Audio Recorder

If you want to step up the quality a bit, use a Digital Audio Recorder. We have a bunch available at the library reserve desk. Get them on a 4-hour loan! (Or Cripps can lend you one for a few days!) These can capture better audio for ANY RECORDING project. You do need to be conducting an in-person interview to use one of the recorders.

Rodecaster Pro

For the adventurous types, we also have a Rodecaster Pro available for those who want to put in a bit of effort. (It’s not that hard! Promise.) With the Rodecaster, you can actually plug in a phone and capture the audio. You can also host a conversation with up to 4 people and record directly into GarageBand. If this tool interests you, let’s make it available!!!
