For the DS106 “The Big Caption” project, we had to use any photo that has been featured on The Big Picture (http://www.boston.com/bigpicture/) and add a typographical text elements in a way that changes the message.  While scrolling through the website, I saw many options.  However, the photo of the woman holding on to a lightpost in the middle of a storm.  When I looked at the photo, I first noticed how calm the woman in the photograph looked.  However, when I looked at the captain, it stated “A woman held on to a lightpost amid very strong winds and rain that battered pedestrians in Copley Square on Jan. 24. (John Tlumacki/Globe Staff).”  I would have never thought that she was holding on to lightpost in order to keep herself from blowing away due to the strong winds.  It almost looks like she is posing for the photo with the way that she is standing.  I found the photo to be hilarious and immediately thought of one of the “Keep Calm and…” memes.  So, I decided to make my own “Keep Calm” meme and captian this photo “Keep Calm & Hug A Pole.”  I wanted to add color to the captain or background.  However, I felt as though the color made the post more hectic and less calm feeling.

Meet my dog Rocco! He is a Black Mouth Cur and 3 years old.  I adopted him while I was in Chicago and he was only 9 months at the time.  Before adopting him, I had a yellow lab that passed away.  My mother had said that she didn’t want to get a dog again.  However, I found out that the city of Chicago was having a “clear the shelters” event.  At this event, all animals at select shelters are available for adoption and free.  When I heard this, I looked at multiple shelters in the area and, after searching through a few different websites, I saw Rocco.  I read the description they had for him and viewed all of the photos and videos available and quickly decided that he was the dog I wanted to adopt.  I showed my parents and they both told me no.  However, I’ve never been one to take no for an answer.  Almost ever hour of the day I texted them a photo of Rocco until they got so annoyed that they agreed to at least go with me to see him.  The next day, we went to the shelter and told the people at the desk that we would like to see Rocco.  We went in to the room of dogs and he was the only one to show completely no interest in us.  We took him into a room separate from the other dogs to try to get him to interact with us, but he still had no interest.  Then, we got some treats to give him and we had his complete attention on us.  He would do anything if it involved food, which wasn’t too surprising considering how skinny he was.  In the end, my parents decided that they would let me take him home considering I would be the one paying for all of his bills and food.  Since then, he has completely opened up, shown us how goofy he is, became my partner in crime and I wouldn’t trade him for anything in the world.

I did the daily create titled “What’s In Your Toast”.  For the daily create I chose a gif that displayed a slideshow of different toasts with different kinds of topping on them.  I chose this gif because toast is one of the things I eat in the morning when I don’t have all that much time to get ready.  To make my day easy, I quickly pop the toast in my microwave and pick out a combination of toppings for it (usually whatever I can find in my fridge).  Today, I have a hard time choosing what I wanted for breakfast and I made two different kinds of toast.  One contained sunflower seed peanut butter, bananas, raspberries, and honey.  The other toast contained cream cheese and avocado.

This assignment was a fun look at the work done throughout the semester. I uploaded all of my pictures and a video onto my Photos app on my computer. Once they were all uploaded, I created a new slideshow in order to put them all together. Once they were in an order that I liked, I exported the slideshow onto my desktop. From there, I tried uploading it onto YouTube, but it continued to reject my video. So, I shared the video from my desktop directly to my YouTube account and it worked that way.

I chose these works because I enjoyed making these the most. It was fun to make memes and learn how to make videos and FIGs!

In order to make this video, I used the app “Pixgram” on my phone. It let me select all of the images I wanted to add into the compilation, choose how long I wanted each of them to display for, and whether I wanted to crop the images to fit in the square or have them fit with a white background instead. I chose to have each picture show for 1.5 seconds and fit the entire picture instead of cropping them. I also decided to add some music in the background so I chose “Take Me Higher” from their free music selection. After a few attempts to make the video file size less than 2MB, I decided to upload it to YouTube instead. I hope you enjoy the finished project and had as much fun looking at my DS106 work as I did creating it.

In order to find a poem for this daily create, I went on Google and searched “simple poem in Italian” and scrolled through until I found this one that was in Italian and did not include a translation. I then racked my brain for all of the words I could remember from my high school Italian classes. I did my best to translate it but I clearly do not remember a whole lot- I am proud of getting the basic concept correct, though. Then to get the actual translation of the poem, I used Google translate. I typed the poem in and took a screenshot of the result it gave me.

To find the original picture, I went on Google images and searched “women’s suffrage.” I chose the picture I wanted, then scrolled through pictures of myself to find one where I could cit out my head in put it between some people. I used the app “Adobe Photoshop Mix” to cut out and merge the two images. I also used the app to put a black and white filter on the image of my face so it would match the other picture. The cropping did not come out great and I’m not extremely happy with the way it turned out with the shadows and how I do not have a hat, but it is okay.

This is a picture that I took at the Great Falls Balloon Festival.  I imported it into the Adobe color schemes program which shows you the color coding to identify the color codes associated with each color.  This would be a great tool to use to choose colors for a webpage or any project.

As a huge music lover, I’m constantly going to concerts. Although I would prefer to use my own photos during my daily creates, I was inspired to use this photo because it’s a picture of my favorite singer and the picture was taken by one of my friends (http://www.nkatsphoto.com). The singer, Lights, is constantly using bright vivid colors with everything she does (I mean do you see her hair?) so I knew a picture from her most recent tour would suffice.  Even though I was at this show I was too close (and too busy dancing) to get an action shot like this.

I took this picture at a music festival this past week but I didn’t know what to use it for since the face was so…unique. When I saw that this was the daily create, I automatically knew I wanted to use it. I usually work Mondays so it was nice to have the day off, so my face in this picture represents how I feel pretty accurately.
