DS106 IMAGES assignment, The Forrest Gump Project

ds106assignment

Yea… no biggie. Just me and my best buddies hanging out next to a U.S Air Force fighter jet. My arm is around a Civil War Veteran who I got to spend celebrating his 107th Birthday at the Eglin Air Force Base (1955). This veteran’s name is “Uncle Bill” Lundy, who is claimed to be the very last living Civil War Veteran. Pretty cool huh?! I think so too. According to Rare Historical Photos, “The plane pictured is North American F-100 Super Sabre. The F-100 flew extensively over South Vietnam as the air force’s primary close air support jet until being replaced by the more efficient subsonic LTV A-7 Corsair II. The F-100 also served in other NATO air forces and with other U.S. allies. In its later life, it was often referred to as the Hun, a shortened version of “one hundred”.”

I will have to say, this was the most challenging DS106 assignment yet. I am assuming that it was the last one assigned because of the challenge. However, I did not give up, maybe just walked away from my laptop from time to time to then revisit my work to final complete it. I found this image on Rare Historical Photos and I thought the story was very cute. I also was trying to find a photo where I could try and make my hack job of a photoshop look realistic. I am terrible at photoshop and give those who have the skills all the credit in the world. Once I was able to use the Lasso Tool on Pixlr, I was able to then size the image of myself. After I got the correct sizing, I saved the image and then once it was on my laptop, took the image and made it black and white. After that, I was happy with it enough to upload it here! Enjoy!

DS 106 IMAGES-The Forrest Gump Project

Perhaps Forrest Gump is the original photo bomber-

But I think it’s more than that.  Forrest actually interacted with the figures of history that he was in the photo with.  This was not the case with me-

I chose to join the historical Ellen DeGeneres selfie photo.  Although it may not be a highly esteemed moment in history, at the time, it broke all of the records for the most tweeted selfie.  I figured that this was an appropriate historical moment for in light of the ENG 304 course.  At the Academy awards on March 2, 2014, Ellen managed to organize a selfie with Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Kevin Spacey, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt,  and Angelina Jolie.  Bradley Cooper was also in the picture-he actually pressed the button.

I found an image of myself that seemed to be the right scale and shape to paste over Kevin Spacey.  I also tried to match the image with the others’ tone, but I think that was the most difficult aspect to achieve.  I used Microsoft Paint to edit my photo and cut my image out.  Once I saved the photo, I tried to re-edit the tone of it, but I wasn’t able to get it quite right.  I wasn’t able to devote more hours to it, but the above is the end result.

DS106 IMAGES- We’re the Real Life Brady Bunch

We’re the Baker Bunch!

After some consideration, I decided to work on the Brady Bunch assignment.  Most of my family members aren’t around this week, so the “That 70’s Show Circle” project was out!  As you probably noticed, I couldn’t resist the last name alliteration, so I went with it.  I struggled with the amount of people/dogs versus the spaces available.  We have four dogs in the family and I wanted them all represented.  I eventually settled with adding a small Baker Bunch sign in between the squares, rather than in the middle.

This project was fun to put together.  I would say the most difficult piece was deciding which pictures to add and trying to get them to a similar scale.  In order to create the entire piece, I used a combination of BeFunky Collage Maker, Microsoft Word, and Microsoft Paint.  BeFunky was a great application to work with.  I was able to easily resize my photos within the collage and flip the photos, as I wanted to mirror the Brady Bunch effect where some people are looking around the square.   I took a screenshot when complete, pasted it into Word, and cropped it down.  I also used Word to recreate the Brady Bunch lettering/font as much as possible. I was able to screenshot the picture again to include the sign and saved it as a jpg.
