Daily Create #tdc3072

For this daily create, as soon as I saw the prompt was about animals, I knew I had to hop on. I actually took the time to check out what other people had already sent to the ds106 page, as the prompt was so interesting. I saw tons of different animals and all sorts of people participating. Even if it was a simple prompt, it allowed for a variety individuals to share their thoughts. It’s really interesting to learn how large the ds106 community is and all the creativity that is held within.

Once I saw that you had to pick an animal that best represents you, I had the exact creature I wanted to go for. The only problem was I don’t have an Owl readily available for photo-shoots. I decided instead to make a gif to help represent my choice for the daily create. I eventually decided on the Owl from the Tootise-Pop commercial as he’s a fairly known owl within the public eye. As well as being a funny commercial that has stuck around for quite a long time. I used the online tool Gifrun to create the gif of the commercial. The source of my gif can be found here; Hope you guys enjoy!

If I were an animal I think I would want to be a whale. It always amazes me and also frightens me when I realize that something this big lives in our oceans. I have always considered the ocean to be a pretty powerful thing, but when you consider everything that lives in the ocean, including the unknown, I instantly become frightened.

I was actually reading an article the other day on the American astronaut Kathy Sullivan who was the first American woman to walk in space. Just this week she also became the first woman to dive to the deepest point in the ocean known as the Challenger Deep, which is 7 miles deep. I personally WOULD NOT and I repeat WOULD NOT do that. Imagine all the creatures that you are surrounded by that you don’t even know are there..no thank you.

Back to the whales though! I think I have always had a love for them because of my mother. When I was younger, my mom and brother would always go fishing (I didn’t like going because I never caught anything) and they would always see whales out in the bay. I remember how upset I was because I had never seen one before, although I was always on the lookout. It was not until 2018 when I went whale watching that I finally saw my first whale. We actually had one go right under our boat and I instantly thought it was going to breach and that would be it, but it didn’t thankfully 🙂

If I were an animal… I’d be a Sea Otter 🙂
They are small chubby (fluffy) mammals who love the ocean. They are gregarious, playful, and close with their family. I can relate to that 🙂

I went back and forth for this daily create when trying to decide which animal I would be. I think I started off thinking about my favorite animal rather than what animal I am most similar to. At first I was thinking I would be an orca or bottlenose dolphin, as these are my two favorite animals. However, I wanted to choose an animal that fit me as a person more rather than just an animal I would like to be. I kept thinking about marine mammals, because aside from birds they are my favorite group of animals. I ultimately decided that the adorable Sea Otter is the animal I would be if I wasn’t human. They are kind of chubby and a bit lazy at times, but very happy and playful. They are intelligent and form close bonds with their friends and families. I can relate to these otter traits and thanks to this assignment, I have decided that the Sea Otter is my new spirit animal. I also decided to find a photo of a Sea otter on google to share with this post because they are too adorable not to share a photo!

My friends and I often bring up this subject, mainly when creating characters with one another or something, and each time they always say polar bear. It’s not my favorite animal, not that I don’t like them, but if I were to choose for myself I would have chosen something like a whale shark- however I have to admit that they are correct that I fit the qualities of a polar bear very well. Winter is my favorite season, you’ve probably seen me around campus before in my shorts just hanging out. I overheat very easily due to my anxiety so it’s often just easier for me to relax about life during winter. I also love to swim and my friends often tell me that even though I’m considered the Dad Friend, that when people hurt their feelings I tend to go to mama bear mode and get highly protective. I never really notice.
